Chronologically, this was the first mention of a Force Ghost and although Qui-Gon was not able to appear as a Ghost, he was able to communicate with the living, thus becoming the first Force Ghost ever. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
A Force Ghost is basically the soul and essence of a deceased Force-sensitive who denied the will of the Force upon death, yet was able to interact with the living. It also refers to those who committed a final act of selflessness that led to their death, and have come to terms with it.
Based on the fact that Ben Kenobi let Vader kill him, we believe that he became a Force Ghost by means of a final act of selflessness. So, Ben Kenobi did and did not disappear. He did disappear in the literal sense of the word, because his body disappeared, but that was a very sophisticated way of dying, since he immediately became one with the Force, later appearing as a real Force Ghost. This manner of death is not unknown in the Star Wars films, since both Yoda and Luke Skywalker disappeared immediately upon dying, becoming Force Ghosts.
Released in , the first installment from George Lucas' famed space opera introduced the narrative's main heroes: Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo. But the movie also debuted its mentor figure in the Jedi Master Obi-Wan whose story more properly played out in the prequel films. While Star Wars didn't reveal much about Obi-Wan considering his limited screen time, he was extremely important to the narrative.

Seeing that the Skywalker twins Luke and Leia were finally reunited, he knew that there was a higher chance that the Rebellion would win with Luke and Leia working together; it's also worth noting that he's one of the very few people who knew that they were related.
In the Original Trilogy, Yoda and Obi-Wan are meditative hermits—no longer the warriors they were in the Prequels—and the fact that their bodies disappear and become one with the Force reflects this change. Overall, we see that the ability to disappear at the moment of death and live on in the Force is not something typical and mundane, but is only possible for Jedi strong in the Force.

Neither Vader nor Luke has mastered the Force well enough at this point to understand what has happened. Many think this because, in his death scene, Ben vanishes from inside his cloak while Vader is cutting him with his lightsaber. So, Obi-Wan may have disappeared before Vader sliced him, thus not giving Vader victory over him, and he still was able to become more powerful.
While each of these theories is possible, Star Wars is all about hope. Hope is faith in things unseen. Perhaps Obi-Wan had that same hope in his death. He was so in tune with the Force that he knew what would happen upon him being struck down. With this, Star Wars fans can also have hope that one day only light will prevail for our favorite characters.
